Every version must carry this full set, itself included, and the x-default page too. If one version leaves out the others or doesn't link back, Google ignores those pairs. HTML tags go in the <head>. One method is enough: HTML tags, the sitemap or the HTTP header.

Hreflang Generator questions.

What is hreflang?

An annotation that tells search engines which language and region a page targets and where its alternate versions live, so each searcher gets the right version in results.

Which codes does hreflang use?

An ISO 639-1 language code, optionally followed by an ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 region, such as en, en-US or pt-BR. A region on its own is invalid, and the UK is GB, not UK.

What is x-default?

The fallback page for users whose language or region does not match any of your versions, often a language selector or your main international page.

Does every page need to list itself?

Yes. Each version must list all versions, including itself, and every version must link back. Missing return links are the most common reason Google ignores hreflang.
