Hreflang checker

Enter a URL to validate its hreflang setup. The checker reads tags from the HTML and HTTP headers, validates every code, then fetches each alternate to confirm it returns 200, is canonical and links back.

Try an example:
What gets checked
  • Language, script and region codes (en-UK, jp, us...)
  • Self-reference and x-default
  • Duplicate codes and relative URLs
  • HTML tags vs the HTTP Link header
  • Status, redirects and noindex on every alternate
  • Canonical tags and return links

How it works

Three steps, no signup.

1

Enter a URL

Use any page that has language or regional versions.

2

Validate the cluster

Codes, x-default and self-reference are checked, then every alternate URL is fetched and checked for return links.

3

Fix the errors

Each problem names the URL and the exact fix, from invalid codes to missing return tags.

FAQ

Hreflang Checker questions.

What are hreflang return links?

If page A lists page B as an alternate, page B must list page A as well. Google ignores hreflang pairs without return links, so this is the first thing to check.

Can hreflang point to a redirect or a noindex page?

It shouldn't. Every hreflang URL should return 200, be indexable and be its own canonical. Pointing to redirects or canonicalised URLs breaks the cluster.

Where can hreflang be declared?

In HTML link tags in the head, in HTTP Link headers (useful for PDFs) or in the XML sitemap. The checker reads the HTML and the HTTP header of the page.

Does hreflang help rankings?

Not directly. Hreflang helps Google show the right language or regional version to each searcher. Your rankings still depend on the page itself.
